Staatsoper Hamburg Redesign
The State Opera in Hamburg is one of the leading opera houses in the world. A upcoming change in leadership in 2025 offers the opportunity to refresh its corporate design as part of this new direction.
The objective of this thesis is to craft a visual identity that respects the historical legacy and independence of the Hamburg State Opera, communicates its evolving vision, and embodies the relevance of a forward-looking, contemporary institution.
The new wordmark captures a dynamic style, transitioning smoothly into italics to evoke associations with the Elbe, the rocking of waves, and the elements of wind and weather. This regional reference to the city of Hamburg, emphasizes its significance as Germany’s first civic opera. The wave-like motion in the design suggests a sense of dramaturgy, symbolizing both musical and theatrical dynamism.
The typographic interpretation of the wave motion is applied to the two additional brands for ballet and orchestra and is also incorporated into headlines.
